AUDITIONS

Auditions available for string, wind, brass, and percussion students.

The audition requirements apply to Virtuoso Pathway applicants and applicants interested in the youth chamber music groups, ensembles and orchestras. You may select ​the option that best fits you in our application form.

Annapolis Symphony Academy students may elect to study with Annapolis Symphony Orchestra leading musicians as a part of the Academy's Virtuoso Pathway program OR study with their existing private teacher and take part in our various ensembles (Teacher Verification form required).

Virtual auditions will be conducted by submitting an audition video online . It's as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Submit the Annapolis Symphony Academy Application Form at your earliest convenience. Select Online Audition.

  2. Prepare and upload your video audition to YouTube as "unlisted". Include the student's first and last name in the title.

  3. Send us the YouTube link via our Video Audition Form.

NO AUDITION IS REQUIRED FOR DISCOVERY APPLICANTS, PLEASE SUBMIT THE APPLICATION FORM ONLY.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS BY GROUP/LEVEL

​

STUDENTS WITH NO EXPERIENCE PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT (DISCOVERY EARLY MUSIC CLASSES).

​

 1. No audition required. An in-person meeting with the applicant and a parent.

 2. A simple aptitude test.

 

BEGINNER LEVEL VIRTUOSO PATHWAY APPLICANTS AND LYRA CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES.

​

  1. One-octave scale of the applicant's choice including arpeggios (two-octave scale encouraged).

  2. A piece of the applicant's choice from Suzuki books 1 through 3 or equivalent level.

​

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL VIRTUOSO PATHWAY APPLICANTS AND ARIES YOUTH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OR AQUARIUS WIND ENSEMBLE.
 

String Requirements

  1. Two-octave scale of the applicant's choice including arpeggios (three-octave scale preferred).

  2. Two contrastingof the applicant's choice from Suzuki books 4 through 7 or equivalent level.

Wind and Brass Requirements

  1. One-octave scale of the applicant's choice (two-octave scale preferred).

  2. Two contrasting pieces of the applicant's choice demonstrating the applicant's current playing level. 

​

Percussion Requirements

  1. Two-octave B flat major scale on bells

 2. One piece on bells and one piece on snare demonstrating the applicant's current playing level.

ADVANCED LEVEL VIRTUOSO PATHWAY APPLICANTS AND ORION YOUTH ORCHESTRA.
 

String Requirements

  1. Three-octave scale and arpeggios of the applicant's choice. 

  2. One solo piece from Suzuki books 8 and above or equivalent level.

  3. Two excerpts of the applicant's choice from the excerpt packets provided below.

Flute and Clarinet

  1. Two-octave scale of the applicant's choice. 

  2. One solo piece (concerto or an equivalent piece) demonstrating the applicant's current playing level. 

  3. Two excerpts of the applicant's choice from the excerpt packets provided below.

 

All Other Wind and Brass

  1. One-octave scale of the applicant's choice (two-octave scales preferred). 

  2. One solo piece (concerto or an equivalent piece) demonstrating the applicant's current playing level. 

  3. Two excerpts of the applicant's choice from the excerpt packets provided below.

*Audition times may vary depending on number of applicants

**Faculty and ensemble directors may determine if a student is ready to move upwards to higher ensembles depending on the students current playing level and progress. The ensemble directors will make a recommendation to the student and parent. Students may audition for a higher ensemble at any point in the semester. Pending a satisfactory audition, students will be assigned to the higher ensemble in semester following the audition date.
