Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Violinist

Born in Russia, Alexandra (Sasha) Mikhlin made her solo violin debut at age 14, playing a Wieniawski violin concerto with the Novosibirsk State Symphony Orchestra. After immigrating to the US in 1991, she performed the Tchaikovsky violin concerto with the Shaker Symphony Orchestra in Cleveland, Ohio, under the conducting baton of her father, Mikhail Solomon Mikhlin. She went on to gain degrees in violin performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Yale University and amass experience in the nation's top orchestras, including the Washington National Opera at Kennedy Center, with whom she performed Wagner's complete Ring cycle.  As an orchestral musician, she has performed under some of the most prominent conductors of this era, including Philippe Auguin, Richard Hickox, Peter Oundjian, Marco Armiliato, Emmanuel Villaume, Jaap van Zweden, Joseph Flummerfelt, Louis Lane, Helmuth Rilling and Leonard Slatkin, among others.  She has performed solo on numerous occasions as concertmaster of Amadeus Chamber Orchestra.  Ms. Mikhlin is also a co-concertmaster of the Apollo Orchestra,  a tenured member of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and freelances regularly with the leading orchestras of the Washington-Baltimore region, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra,  the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Washington Concert Opera, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra  and Wolf Trap Orchestra. Alexandra has performed orchestral, solo, and chamber works in festivals throughout Europe, including Spoleto dei Due Mondi (Spoleto, Italy), Bachakademie, (Stuttgart, Germany), and the American Conservatory (Fontainebleau, France).  In the U.S., she has performed at the Spoleto festival (Charleston, SC) and the Crested Butte Festival (Colorado). 

 

A sought-after teacher, Sasha is a faculty member at Levine School and an adjunct professor at the Anne Arundel Community College.  Her students have won first prize in numerous competitions, such as Marlin-Engel and Cogen competitions, the Vivo International Youth Competition, Concert Artists International Maestro Competition, Feder Memorial String Competition, Misbin Chamber competition, and American Fine Arts Festival. Her students have performed in Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and in many concerts in embassies of Washington DC.  Sasha also teaches privately in Annapolis, MD, where she lives with her husband Marcus and their three children.  When she isn’t playing the violin, she is passionate about traveling, reading, and baking.
